Kwang'wa Tsoki Orchard Restoration Project

We work with schools, villages, families, clans, and individuals to restore historical orchards, heirloom fruit trees and the traditions that accompany them within the Hopi Villages. Seasonal workshops are held to teach how to properly prune, plant, transplant, mulch, and graft fruit trees. We also provide information and workshops on planting fruit tree guilds and companion planting.

The vision of the project is to plant new orchards and restore to full health the many orchards that provided Hopi people with fresh fruits for hundreds of years. Our primary goal is to support the establishment of fruit tree orchards in every Hopi village for every Hopi family as well as in all Hopi schools. Since 2008 we have partnered with the Fruit Tree Planting Foundation who has graciously donated fruit trees, irrigation, and technical assistance to establish community based orchards.

Thanks to this project, there is greater awareness of the importance of local food production and agro-forestry in combating erosion and building healthy soils. Our project also raises awareness of agro-forestry practices in local Hopi villages. We have 3 Certified Orchard-Keepers and over 2000 volunteers from seven local villages, Navajo communities, and local schools working with our project. Together we have helped establish 10 community orchards and 7 school orchards with a total of 2500 fruit trees contained in all orchards!
